“Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
—JAMES 4:7-8
Satan is certainly active today—but he has always been active, because his goal has not changed: to block God’s work. Whenever God is at work, you can be sure Satan will counterattack and try to stop whatever God is doing.
The Bible doesn’t tell us in detail about Satan and how he works. After all, our focus should be on God, not on Satan. (If we concentrate mainly on Satan, we’ll become either overly fearful or overly fascinated—and both are wrong.)
But the Bible does tell us two important truths about Satan (whose name means “adversary”). First, he is real, and he will do everything he can to draw us away from Christ. He tempts us to do wrong, but most of all he tempts us to turn away from God. Second, Satan is a defeated foe. By His death and resurrection, Jesus conquered Satan, so by the power of His Holy Spirit in us, we can stand against him.
Don’t be deceived by Satan and his lies. Instead, stay close to Christ—because the closer you are to Him, the farther away you are from the devil.
Think about this: What is the key to making the devil flee? Prayer.
According to Scripture, we must actively resist him. This means being filled with Your Word, Father, and standing firm in what we know to be true and right. Amen.
